A critical review on high employee attrition caused by rigid human resource management

Introduction:

Human resource management has a direct personal impact on us as employees in shaping the nature of our work, our pay and our career prospects (Huczynski and Buchanan, 2007).One of the major problems encountered in today’s business world is dealing with high employee attrition. Attrition is the reduction in the number of employees through retirement, resignation or death.This article addresses the issue of high employee attrition taking place in an organization. Sometimes it’s impossible to ensure the retention of a particular group of employees; in those cases, companies can learn to adopt (Cappelli, 2001).

Root Cause of Attrition:

Skills can be stretched in many directions, but if they are not going in the right direction employees are at risk of becoming dissatisfied and uncommitted (Butler and Waldroop, 2001). Company following the Hard HRM practice where emphasizes is given on the full utilization of employees in a formal, calculating and dispassionate manner results in high attrition rate in strategical business units of the company (Huczynski and Buchanan, 2007).

Some of the factors which influenced employee turnover:

Lack of proper management, facilities, training and motivation
Poor infrastructure
Compensation is much below industry standards
Lack of respect for employees and favoritism
Saturdays working
Appraisals, career and personal development nonexistent
Low quality of workforce
Lack of leadership qualities in manager

The corporate boards of directors tend to be dominated by the finance and accounting function, which pushes ‘soft’ personnel voices aside ( Huczynski and Buchanan, 2007).One of the issues that have influenced personnel management practice is the unspoken agreement, or psychological contract, between employee and organization (Rousseau, 1990, 1995), where employees expects the fair treatment, a degree of security and personal development.

According to David Guest and Zella King (2001):

Managers may not be aware of psychological contract research;
Managers may feel that research evidence does not apply to their strategic business unit;
Managers may believe that they already have appropriate practices;

Impact of Attrition:

Staff turnover creates costs, but these are difficult to measure. When employees leave, output is lost. Costs are then incurred in advertising and interviewing, then training the new recruits. Turnover is often a symptom of low morale, which can reduce corporate profitability by depressing staff performance .For example- William Mercer was able to demonstrate to Quest Diagnostics that if staff turnover were reduced by just 5 percentage points, this would make an annual profit contribution of US$31 million. Faced with this evidence, managers who had been complacent about the company’s staff turnover were shocked into action.(based on Cathy Copper, ‘In for the count’, People Management, vol. 6, no.20, 12 October 2000a, pp, 28-34). Also Robinson and Rousseau (1994) found that 55 per cent of their management sample said their psychological contract had been broken by their employer. The consequences are damaging for both the individuals and the organization, and include low job satisfaction, poor performance, high staff turnover, feelings of anger and betrayal and the erosion of trust.

Measures to control Attrition:

Employees are investments if effectively managed and developed, provide long-term awards for organization hence policies, programs, and practices must be created that satisfy both the economic and emotional needs of employees. A working environment must be created in which employees are encouraged to develop and utilize their skills to the maximum extent (Carrell and Elbert, 2000).

‘Profit through people’ can be produced through people management policies such as reducing status differentials and sharing information across the organization (Based on Jeffrey Pfeffer, The Human Equation, Harvard Business School Press, Boston, MA, 1998).Guest (1989) identified that there must be senior management support for the success of HRM.

‘Like it or not, it’s the younger generation that will have to mentor us rather than the other way around’ (Coutu , 2001).Supervisors can provide guidance to their subordinates by assisting and guiding them, by making them available to answer questions otherwise letting subordinates work things out by themselves (Hackman and Suttle, 1997). The employer should practise Soft HRM which is people-oriented, rooted in human relations thinking, emphasizing motivation, communication and leadership (Huczynski and Buchanan, 2007). By treating employees well, organizations profits can rise. A central ethics committee should be set up to reinforce the values of respect, honesty, efficiency, care and trust (based on Georgina Fuller,’ Come the revolution’, People Management, vol. 11, no.17, 1 September 2005, pp.38-40).

Two main factors in Huselid’s list of 13 high performance practises:

Skills developments: the acquisition and development of employee skills, through selection, induction, training and the use of performance appraisal systems
Job design: the designs of jobs, including skill flexibility, job responsibility, variety and the use of teams

Conclusion:

According to Narayan Murthy (CEO Infosys), ‘Our assets walk out of the door each evening, we have to make sure that they come back the next morning’, employer should treat their employees as customers, by understanding their needs which drives employer satisfaction. Making adjustments is as important as achieving results (Phillips and Connell, 2003), hence by applying bath’s model, managers should provide adequate support and motivation for their team. There should be good communications in every strategical business unit, emphasis on team work and rewards on organizational performance should be proposed. The basic purpose of these strategies is to boost employee morale and hence achieve retention.

From the above study I want to conclude that employees are the capital of an organization. So in order to retain employees, organization has to satisfy their employees. This Korean super-genius was born in 1962 and might just be the smartest guy alive today (he’s recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as having the highest IQ of anyone on the planet). By the age of four he was already able to read in Japanese, Korean, German, and English. At his fifth birthday, he solved complicated differential and integral calculus problems. Later, on Japanese television, he demonstrated his proficiency in Chinese, Spanish, Vietnamese, Tagalog, German, English, Japanese, and Korean. Kim was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records under “Highest IQ”; the book estimated the boy’s score at over 210.Kim was a guest student of physics at Hanyang University from the age of 3 until he was 6. At the age of 7 he was invited to America by NASA. He finished his university studies, ventually getting a Ph.D. in physics at Colorado State University before he was 15. Akrit Jaswal is a young Indian who has been called “the world’s smartest boy” and it’s easy to see why. His IQ is 146 and is considered the smartest person his age in India —a country of more than a billion people.Akrit came to public attention when in 2000 he performed his first medical procedure at his family home. He was seven. His patient — a local girl who could not afford a doctor — was eight. Her hand had been burnt in a fire, causing her fingers to close into a tight fist that wouldn’t open. 5. Aelita Andre: The 2-year-old artist who showed her paintings in a famous Gallery

The abstract paintings of emerging artist Aelita Andre have people in Australia ’s art world talking. Aelita is two (the works were painted when she was even younger). Aelita got an opportunity to show her paintings when Mark Jamieson, the director of Brunswick Street Gallery in Melbourne ’s Fitzroy, was asked by a photographer whose work he represented to consider the work of another artist. Jamieson liked what he saw and agreed to include it in a group show. Jamieson then started to promote the show, printing glossy invitations and placing ads in the magazines Art Almanac and Art Collector, featuring the abstract work. Only then did he discover a crucial fact about the new artist: Aelita Andre is Kalashnikova’s daughter, and was just 22 months old. 6. Saul Aaron Kripke: Invited to apply for a teaching post at Harvard while still in high school

A rabbi’s son, Saul Aaron Kripke was born in New York and grew up in Omaha in 1940. By all accounts he was a true prodigy. In the fourth grade he discovered algebra, and by the end of grammar school he had mastered geometry and calculus and taken up philosophy. While still a teenager he wrote a series of papers that eventually transformed the study of modal logic. One of them earned a letter from the math department at Harvard, which hoped he would apply for a job until he wrote back and declined, explaining, “My mother said that I should finish high school and go to college first”. After finishing high school, the college he eventually chose was Harvard. Kripke was awarded the Schock Prize, philosophy’s equivalent of the Nobel. 7. Michael Kevin Kearney: earned his first degree at age 10 and became a reality show Millionaire.

8. Fabiano Luigi Caruana: a chess prodigy who became the youngest Grandmaster at age 14

Fabulous Fabiano is a 16-year-old chess Grandmaster and chess prodigy with dual citizenship of Italy and the United States .On 2007 Caruana became a Grandmaster at the age of 14 years, 11 months, 20 days – the youngest Grandmaster in the history of both Italy and the United States . In the April 2009 FIDE list, he has an Elo rating of 2649, making him the world’s highest ranked player under the age of 18.

9. Willie Mosconi: played professional Billiards at age 6

William Joseph Mosconi, nicknamed “Mr. Pocket Billiards” was a American professional pocket billiards (pool) player from Philadelphia , Pennsylvania . Willie’s father owned a pool hall where he wasn’t allowed to play, but Willie improvised by practicing with small potatoes from his mother’s kitchen and an old broomstick. His father soon realized that his son was a child prodigy began advertising challenge matches, and though Willie had to stand on a box in order to reach the table, he beat experienced players many years his senior. In 1919, an exhibition match was arranged between six-year old Willie and the reigning World Champion, Ralph Greenleaf. It always boils down to positioning value when selling at C Level anywhere, more so in services sales. Its all about articulation and clear communication of scope that wins you more deals from same customer and also helps you add more customers to your existing portfolio of offerings.It is good to have a one-off great impression sale, the bigger challenge is to foster relationship based selling, which ensures multiple-sells in future.

Positioning yourself as a solutions-provider rather than a product/service vendor certainly helps. Follow an 80:20 rule while interacting with "C" level individuals - 80% listening and 20% talking. It certainly works if you LISTEN to your prospect's problems and then give him the specific information he needs.

Do your research!! Ensure that you have all the facts straight about their current situation, incumbent suppliers, costs, contract renewal dates, satisfaction level of existing services, internal sponsors, etc, etc. Only then will you be able to confidently pitch your services knowing what the C level contact is going to want to hear. If you can tell him/her what he/she needs, rather than asking them to tell you, they'll always be impressed and at least give you some of their time.

The first question you need to answer is, "who really owns the problem you're going to solve, and who owns the decision you want made?". If it is indeed the CFO or CEO, then the feedback others gave regarding forget the tricks and techniques and just call them, and talk to them about something they care about. The first thing you’ll need to figure out, is why would the CEO or CFO care about your product or service. I can guarantee you, the fastest way to ensure a C-level call goes badly, is to start talking about your product or service. What most senior executives care about is solving problems or achieving specific goals.

So the first thing you need to figure out is, what does your product or service do that will help the CEO solve a problem or achieve a goal that they are personally responsible for. For the CEO some examples might be issues that impact Business Continuity, Overall Revenue goals, (especially for public firms), Company Image or Reputation, etc and for the CFO goals or problems around Profitability, Cost Reduction goals, or Cash Flow. Google the CEO or CFO or look on the company web site under Press Releases, see if they've publicly stated any goals in this regard, then align what your solution does with how it would fundamentally impact those goals. This will also give you some context about how they talk about these goals or problems from their perspective.

The most important part of a C-level call, is to first get them to confirm if they have problems or objectives around the issues you want to talk to them about. That can only be accomplished with intelligent questions, not with a “product pitch”.

The interesting thing about C-levels, is that if you really you can help them achieve their goals or solve their problems, initially they won’t really care if you do that by Training, Software or Gerbils in a wheel. They just care about the problem or the goal. That’s why you talk about the Problem or Goal first, and how you help second.

Last piece of advice, keep it short and to the point. Don't build rapport, don't ask them how their day is going, instead, just tell them why you're calling, why you thought that would be important to them, and then ask them if that's important to them and then shut-up and let them answer. If you can indeed align yourself with their C-level goals or problems, you'll be surprised how many will be open to a brief and to the point conversation.

And yes, never forget the golden rule "you need him more than he needs you"

One truck driver was doing his usual load delivery at a mental hospital, by parking his vehicle beside an open drain.

He discovered a flat tyre when he was about to return from the mental hospital. He jacked up the truck and removed the flat tyre to fix the spare tyre.When he was about to fix the spare tyre, he accidentally dropped all the 4 bolts in the open drain.

As he cannot fish the bolts in the open drain, he started to panic as to what should be done?Just then, one patient happened to walk past him and asked the driver as to why he was looking troubled.

The driver thought to himself, since there is nothing much he can do or this mental joker can. Just to keep the bugging away, the truck driver informed the whole episode to the mental patient and gave a helpless look.

The patient just laughed at the truck driver and said “you just cannot even fix such a simple problem? No wonder you are destined to remain a truck driver for life".

The truck driver was astonished to hear such a compliment from a mental guy." Here is what you can do “said the mental guy

"Take one bolt from each of the remaining 3 tyres/wheels and fix it on to this tyre. Then drive down to the nearest workshop and replace the missing ones. Isn’t it simple my friend ".

The truck driver was so impressed with this quick fix answer and asked the patient "how come you are so smart and intelligent and you are here at the mental hospital?"
The patient replied..." hello friend! I stay here because I am crazy but not stupid".

No wonder, there are some people, who behave like the Truck Driver, thinking that others are just stupid. So, guys, though you all are learned and wise, but, just watch out, there could be some CRAZY guys in our professional / personal lives, who could give us lot of quick fixes and brush our wisdom.

The moral of the story is - just do not conclude that you know everything and do not judge people by mere looks/ attire stature or academic background.

Who sells the largest number of cameras in India ?
Your guess is likely to be Sony, Canon or Nikon. The answer is: None of the above. The winner is Nokia, whose main line of business in India is not cameras but cell phones. The reason is that cameras bundled with cellphones are outselling standalone cameras. Now, what prevents the cellphone from replacing the camera outright? Nothing at all.

Try this...Who runs the biggest music business in India ?
The answer is Airtel. By selling caller tunes (that play for 30 seconds) Airtel earns more than music companies do by selling albums. Airtel is not in the music business. It is the mobile service provider with the largest subscriber base in India . That sort of a competitor is difficult to detect and even more difficult to beat. By the time you have identified him, he has already gone past you.....
But if you imagine that Nokia and Bharti (Airtel's parent) are breathing easy, you couldn't be further from the truth. Nokia has reportedly acknowledged that it missed the smart-phone bus. Films vs Cricket:
India has two passions. Films and cricket. The two markets were distinctly different. So were the icons. The cricket gods were Sachin and Sehwag. The film gods were the Khans (Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan etc). That was when cricket was fundamentally test cricket or at best 50-over cricket. Then came the Indian Premier League and the two markets collapsed into one. IPL brought cricket down to 20 overs, reducing the game to the length of a three-hour movie. Cricket became a competitor to film. Desperate multiplex owners requisitioned the rights for screening IPL matches at movie halls to hang on to the audience. If the IPL were to become the mainstay of cricket, films would have to sequence their releases so as to not clash with IPL matches. As far as the audience is concerned, both are a three-hour "tamasha" (entertainment). Cricket season might push films out of the market.
Look at the products that vanished from India in the last 20 years. When did you last see a black and white movie? When did you last use a fountain pen? When did you last type on a typewriter? The answer for all the above is "I don't remember!"

Some 20 years ago, what were Indians using to wake them up in the morning? An alarm clock, that monster of mechanical springs. It had to be physically wound up every day. There once was a little boy who had a bad temper.His Father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence.

The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.

Finally the ! day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. The great Greek king, Alexander, after conquering many kingdoms, was returning home. On the way, he fell ill and he was bedridden for months. With death drawing close, Alexander realized how his conquests, his great army, his sharp sword and all his wealth were of no use.
He called his generals and said, “I will depart from this world soon. But I have three wishes. Please fulfill my wishes without fail.” With tears flowing down their cheeks, the generals agreed to abide by their king’s last wishes.

“My first desire is that,” said Alexander, “my physicians alone must carry my coffin. Secondly, when my coffin is being carried to the grave, the path leading to the graveyard should be strewn with gold, silver and precious stones which I have collected in my treasury. My third and last wish is that both my hands should be kept dangling out of my coffin.”

The people who had gathered there wondered at the king’s strange wishes. But no one dared to question. 1.I want my physicians to carry my coffin because people should realize that no doctor can really cure anybody. They are powerless and cannot save a person from the clutches of death. So let not people take life for granted.

How do you handle the dreaded salary question?

In an interview you will be asked two questions about compensation. If you do not handle them correctly it will be the end of the interview process or cost you a lot of money.
The first question is about earnings history. “What are you earning or what did you earn in your most recent job”?The second question is about your required compensation. “What do you need “? “What are you looking for”?

I will not review the bad advice but will cover the correct answers to both questions. The first question about earnings history must be answered honestly and accurately. Since it can easily be verified there is no point in trying to dodge the question so tell the truth. There are no circumstances that justify anything else.

The harder question that everybody frets over is what are you looking for?

One thing you never want to do is give a fixed number. Any number high or low will hurt you. Let’s look at what giving a number will do.

If the number is to high your interview process will end. The opportunity may have been so great that you might have considered it for less but in the beginning of the process it is too early to tell and the number you give assures you will never find out. Giving a number cost you the job. What if you decide to play it safe and give a low number? Suppose you say you would like 60K. If the employer was prepared to go to 65K you just lost 5K because like everybody else he wants to save money and if he thinks he can get you for 60K that is exactly what he will offer. Giving a low number cost you money and giving a high number cost you the job.

So if you can’t give a number what do you do?

You give the following answer;

My reason for being here is to evaluate the opportunity just as you are evaluating my fit for your organization. If the opportunity is everything I want and I satisfy all your needs I’m sure the money will not be an issue.

In most cases that will be the end of it. Some interviewers may push you by saying something like, I know you are primarily interested in the opportunity but really, what are your salary expectations?

In this case turn the question around on the interviewer with something like,

You know my background, skills and experience as well as your needs and pay range; what compensation do you feel would be appropriate?

You Don't Need Everything from Day One
* You don't need to incorporate from day one.
* You don't need an office.

Don't feel like your business has to look like a "real business" from day one. Concentrate on selling and then selling some more. That's all you should be working on at the very beginning.

Have Contractors, not Employees
Having contractors has many advantages:

* They don't need a desk or office space.
* When work is slow, they get paid less. When there's a lot of work, they make more money. Try to do that with an employee.

Pay for Results
It's OK to have some people on retainers, but make sure that most of their income is tied to results. If they bring you a lot of business, they should make a lot of money. Use Relationship Marketing to Your Advantage

Do As Much as You Can Yourself
Build your own website, design your own business cards and write your own marketing copy. This won't look as great as work done by professionals, but it'll free and fast. Once you've sold a few thousand dollars worth of products, you can always re-do your website, business cards and marketing copy using experts.

Barter as Much as You Can
Very few people barter these days, but bartering is extremely powerful. If you have something other people want, try to barter for their services. You might not get the best expert in the industry to work with you, but whomever you get will be good enough.

Leverage Other People's Businesses
You should take advantage of the retail locations, distribution channels and manpower that other companies pay for. For example, if you sell t-shirts, opening your own retail store will be way more expensive than selling your t-shirts through other people's stores. Let them carry your products. Interview Preparation – The Key to Success!

"Nothing is more feared or more misunderstood in the job search process than interviewing. People tend to conjure up all their fears and insecurities when an interview is requested and sometimes the level of anxiety is so high it actually sabotages the interview.

A certain level of nerves is good. Any athlete will tell you that being a little nervous “tunes” us up for the competition and sharpens our “edge.” However, in an interview situation we do not want appear so nervous that it detracts from our ability to present a professional image. That is where careful preparation comes in.

When we are well-prepared, we can present a relaxed and polished image and are less likely to get flustered by unexpected questions. Always keep in mind that the interviewer already thinks you are qualified for the job or you would have gotten the interview!

Here are six steps to effective interview preparation:

1. Research the company. Make sure you know what the company does, who their customers are, and how they are doing. If they are a publicly traded firm, reading the most recent Annual Report is very helpful. Running a search on Google for the company usually turns up loads of information about any firm.

2. Download and study everything you can find about the specific job position for which you are interviewing. If the job was published, study the job description thoroughly and be sure to read between the lines. If there is no specific job description, then analyze the firm’s most likely needs and think about how you an help them with their business objectives.

3. Research the person who will interview you. Simply searching for the person’s name is usually enough and if they are in LinkedIn that may be all you need to do! Study their background and especially look for anything you may have in common with them.

4. Read your own resume and be ready to talk about your career accomplishments by telling stories. Stories are very powerful ways to explain what you can do for a company. Use the SAR model – Situation, Action, and Results – to help guide you and don’t talk too much about a single accomplishment. Two or three minutes is more than enough.

5. Prepare two or three substantive questions about the company based on your research about the company. Questions like “Where do you see the company going over the next few years?” or “Do you have plans for any new products or services?” or “What do you think is the key to the company’s success?” are good questions that will position you as a strong candidate.

6. Be ready with a 30-second “commercial” in answer to the possible invitation to “tell me about yourself.” Write it out and practice it frequently. The commercial should talk more about what you can do than who you are.

Finally, be very clear that every interview is a selling opportunity. The potential customer is the employer and you are the commodity that you are trying to “sell”. Previously floppy discs served the basic storage requirements for the users. But then came a remarkable shift from the magnetic storage to optical compact discs pushing aside the use of floppy. Moving a step further DVD or Digital Versatile Disc was invented in 1995.

Blu ray discs are mainly used for storing high-definition video, PlayStation 3 video games, and other data, with up to 25 GB per single layered, and 50 GB per dual layered disc prototypes.Also providing superior resolution for more detailed images, improved audio quality and special features like pop-up menu, which allows you to access the menu functions while the movie continues playing and picture-in-picture video commentary and the ability to download new content right from your Blu-ray player and so on make it a lot better than its counterparts and also worth the penny.

According to the Digital Entertainment Group, the total number of Blu-ray Disc playback had reached 9.6 million by the end of 2008.According to Swicker & Associates, Blu-ray Disc software sales in the United States and Canada were 1.2 million in 2006, 19.2 million in 2007, and 82.4 million in 2008. Toshiba has already announced that they will only manufacture Blu ray disc players and many laptop manufacturing companies have too planned to drift towards the new technology. So probably in the next 10 years to go, Blu ray discs replacing DVDs is not some impractical thought.

Landline Phone (Will be replaced by Mobile Devices)
Or should I say it already has. The mobile industry has an interminable list of options for almost every social class ,when it comes to making a preference for a mobile phone. Also as the Smartphones get more like a hand held PC, there has been a major dependence on these handsets as a result of online fever and time constraints. So when you can enjoy the access to the whole world on the go, the grounded landline devices are sure not to attract much of your attention. And with mobiles available at the most cheapest prices, owning a one is no longer unfeasible.

I also came across a Nielsen report that reveals that 21% of households in U.S.A now use mobile phones only giving up the land line numbers and that 15% of households now own at least one smartphone. So in a world where convenience and pragmatism play a paramount importance, wireless communication completely wiping out the traditional landline systems, that’s possible without a second doubt.

Data Card (Will be replaced by 3G and 4G Phones)
As the list of the wireless service providers gains momentum, there have been new services and offers for the users. Data cards are the portable devices used for wireless high speed internet access. But with the advent of faster technology in the form of 3G and 4G, these devices may be loosing out onto their significance. 3G Internet or Third Generation Internet Technology is the fastest mode of data communication now and having a 3G enabled phone is like carrying the world in your pocket. Listing out the advantages, 3G offers its users voice and video calls, mobile TV, mobile internet, mobile e-mail and mapping and GPS applications. So talking about 4G would mean even better performance, faster speed and refined features. There are few companies rolling out 3G Data Cards but why carry another device when your phone can cater all your needs. Also the basic feature of video and voice calls is not supported by every data card. Some data cards are also used for data storage but with phones carrying a surplus memory from 8GB to 32 GB or may be even more should not rise much concern. So spending a little extra amount would not be a major issue as your most valuable time will be hoarded by enhanced performance and speed.So as I mentioned earlier about the phones becoming indispensable part of our lives, a 3G or 4G phone will be all that you will need to stay connected on the go.

LCD TV (will be replaced by Plasma TV)
Now that’s a tough choice to make as these are two hostile technologies that more or less deliver the same experience. But then one has to be a winner. Coming onto the technical front, Plasma offers better contrast level, color accuracy, viewing angle, excellent performance with fast moving images and high contrast levels, an average of 60,000 hours longevity in the display and enjoys a better production size and cost and lower pricing per size. But LCD TVs too enjoy superiority over plasma when it comes to brightness, screen glare, screen burn in and most importantly power consumption. But the companies have already started the efforts to deal with these drawbacks and plasma is sure to evolve as a complete package and slowly take over the LCD fondness. So the next 10 years will be fun watching these technologies battle to emerge as a sole leader of the industry.

2D Cinema (replaced by 3D and 4D)
The Cinema has covered a long journey from 19th century to 21st century. Whether in terms of the infrastructural or echnology growth, the motion picture industry has matured significantly. The conventional 2 D cinema has long served its viewers and with more than half industry still producing the 2D films it wouldn’t be a wise idea to place my final verdict. But looking back at the development in the field I may not sound foolish too. The transition from black & white to colored films, changing production styles and technology all point to the changing scenario of the movie industry. Infact the virtual reality concept that is widely used today for more augmented reality could not have been imagined until 20th century. Also with movies like Avatar, getting an overwhelming fastest 1 Billion earning clearly show 3D craze catching on pretty well.
So the whole idea of having a virtual presence and experiencing things happening around you is exciting and lots of fun. Yes I am not ignoring the hefty price tag attached to it. But the development of computer-generated imagery and the introduction of high-definition video standards, the 3 D and 4 D cinema have a potential calibre to overcome the usual 2D soon and a decade to predict that shift, worth consideration.

Dedicated Web Hosting (all will move to cloud)
Taking a Wikipedia definition web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to make their own website accessible via the World Wide Web. In a layman language the web hosts provide server space for people owning a website. In a dedicated web hosting the user doest not own the server but has complete control over it.
But what if your operations exceed the limited bandwidth dedicated for you. Well lets take an example here. Amazon runs 13 million models in the cloud. For a server to support such a big number, it will require thousands of servers increasing the hardware cost immensely (include the expenditure for other software and services too). That does not sound scalable. Also Google who has billions or even more user base, runs many of its operations from cloud as that provides more efficiency and faster performance. So next time when your site gets more hits than the server’s capability and your site crashes, you know its time to move to cloud. And as cloud computing gets integrated into our internet life, this change in next ten years easy and apparent.
For the start-up sites, there are a number of cloud services from Cisco, Amazon, Microsoft and Google. These are easier to host, cheaper to maintain, more reliable. I doubt if anyone will host in dedicated hosting in future.

Mobile Voice Call– Local/ISD/STD (all will be replaced by Voice over internet)
Probably every person owns a mobile today and internet use is well routed into a normal day life. Also the technologies like 3G and 4G have made internet connection fast and easily available and there are services like Skype that provide free video calling. So with such effortless and free access, why would people still confine to the traditional calling styles?
Since we are talking about a major shift in the next decade I cannot base my results on mere assumptions. So let me share a news with you that some of you may have already heard about. The Finland government has introduced a law for guaranteed 1 Mb broadband access to every person living in the country where almost 79% of the population uses Internet. Now a country where every person has an internet access, why would the same traditional calling way be followed? Similarly if the whole world flows in the same wave, Mobile Voice Call– Local/ISD/STD is sure to lose its ground.
The introduction of Netphone and Netbooks are sure to speed up this process

User Login (will be replaced by finger print readers or eye readers)
Many of us already have that in our laptops, and those of you working in banks, multinationals etc are well acquainted with the technology.
The retina and fingerprint recognitions are the most secure login modes because of their uniqueness for every being on the planet. A usual login name or a password may be difficult to reveal but not impossible as they usually revolve around few facts related to our lives and there are ample geek minds with their own algorithms to hack even the most complex passwords. And as recent trends reveal the vulnerability of our passwords getting into the hands of cyber criminals, a more robust and secure way is the demand of the hour. So as computers continue to advance to unmatched levels, this technology has latent ability to ground itself in the next ten years.
One of my friends feels most people prefer Passwords over Fingerprint or Eye Reader as passwords can be shared in need. I doubt if this reason can save it. After-all there is always share option in most features, and with more advanced technologies you may no longer need to share passwords.

Credit Card (replaced by SmartPhone or NetPhone with barcode)
Credit Card is one of the biggest inventions of the Finance Industry that made it the king of all industries. When barter system was replaced by monetary system, hardly anyone would have thought that next replacement might come. But Credit Cards and Debit Cards made that happen. The Bank Cards ended the problem of carrying huge cash to make big and/or multiple transactions.
Now the time has come when we are pissed off to carry many cards in our wallet. Every time we carry several cards like Credit Card, Debit Card, Insurance Card, Club Membership Card, Driving Licence, SSN or PAN Card, Ration Card, Company Identity Card etc. This needs to be replaced by some technology that’s easier to carry and use.
Well the Technology just might be a Smartphone like an iPhone. Already two companies have brought an add-on to convert iPhone to Credit Card Reader. Another is sure to bring another add-on soon that has bar code of the Credit Card Number.
The Smartphones will not only replace the Card Reader Terminals and Credit Card, but also enable any user to pay or receive money through the gadget itself. No one will be standing in a queue at ATM to withdraw cash or no issuing cheque or carrying Cards for shopping. The day is not too far.

Print media and newspaper( will be replaced by online news)
Most of the Newspapers have already gone digital, and now we no longer need to get a hard copy paper in the morning. Regular news updates on the mobile too have helped in staying updated with whats happening where. There are also plenty of news channels around and newspapers have been slowly loosing out to the growing internet world. Google is bullish with this idea and it is already working on converting 1 million books online. Amazon brought Kindle, a gadget just for reading books, few years back. Now there are many companies producing more than 30 models of E-Readers.
I do not say that the vast and old libraries will be left abundant and the existence of print media will be wiped out completely, but the technology shift has already begun and in years to come we may witness such situation.
When the first room sized computer was made by the engineers, little they would have thought that one day their technology would rest on the laps of people as laptops. When Alexander Graham Bell made the first electric telephone, he would have not imagined about the wireless world too. That is the only reason why I find technology so interesting because it never rests and it makes everything possible. So as the new decade starts it will be pleasurable to watch science boom in its own way and technology thrive each day.

Sales or Marketing?

No doubt that Execution and Strategy goes hand in gloves to get better results, But which one is more important of both?

A Marketing Guru says “Sales is short term whereas Marketing is long term".
A Senior manager of one of the leading FMCG MNC says" Strategy is sexy but Execution is what matters".

SALES is the Only Driver. Unless you sell and receive $$$, all that you shout about is useless .Sales is what pays for every activity. Every great inventor has to SELL his/her inventions before people started seeing them as requirement. Sales keep the ball rolling.....

Sales is the only function that generates revenue for the organization. If revenues are important to sustain your business then Sales takes precedence as it brings the money to keep you afloat.

Sales is far more impacting and fruitful for organizations. Marketing can only complement by giving a face to the efforts of the sales department but yes I really believe and practice that "Strategy is a commodity and Execution is an art"

Sales was never part of Marketing although I agree that they are closely linked and it is sometimes difficult to decide whether it's operational marketing or straight sales.Let me put it this way, companies can exist without marketing departments (often this is the first thing that goes in a budget cut because the ROI is difficult to prove) but they cannot exist without sales.

MARKETING helps in bringing more money in a short period of time, as the brand sells easier. If you have enough money to invest without the pressure to generate revenues to sustain yourself.... then marketing can take precedence as it helps in building your brand & message.

Sales is section of Marketing. Marketing generates attention + interest. Sales makes it tailor-made and gets the necessary conformation (Closing). The Better Marketing, The easier the sale. When you think "is it easy to make a sale of a BRAND or NO BRAND?"

Sales can be expensive compared to Marketing! Today how many customers can you visit a day and how can you convince them if your product never existed before

When you market the product, you're making people think about how they would feel with that product in their possession.As an example, I want to say that the sale iPods would not be a success today if they weren't advertised. Marketing plays a large role in helping the consumer organizing their needs and wants for their personal level of satisfaction.

Marketing is only king if your delivering a mass retail product like an ipod. Because lets face it most sales advisors are not that greatest and that product needs to be taken to market. However who is going to negotiate the longtime product placement of these fantastic items.”Sales Person”

Marketing is the key to almost every sale when you are new in the market. Unless you market your self/brand, people will not know about it. You will have customers buying your product/services by getting referred to you from previous clients after you have made a good sale but to get those initial clients in the door so you can make the SALE will require some marketing.

Sales & Marketing

Sales people rely on the marketing plan to help their territory strategy, and Marketing should rely on sales to provide honest feedback on the real conditions in the market that "market research" can't provide.

Both are equally difficult and present their own challenges. Though not everyone is cut out to do both, I think the departments should cross-train. A good marketer can't devise a plan without having been in front of customers in a real selling situation, and good sales persons should be able to understand the rationale behind the marketing plan.

The question is sort of like asking 'what came first, the chicken or the egg?' I think there are three things to consider when looking at building one's business: Image, Brand and Reputation. If you look at the recent dealings with Tiger Woods as of late, you can see how almost his personal image, brand overnight and reputation has been tarnished. Can an ad fix that? Can someone sell us the right story to fix that? My answer would be - not likely. Right now someone is using twitter to share their thoughts on the situation, someone is writing it on their face book page; in fact, I'm even bringing it up on Blog.

Fundamentally, advertisers will say marketing is king, and the sales department will say sales is king.

So, what do I think is most important?
Well, here they are: Quality of product, availability of product, ease of doing business with you, friendliness and helpfulness of sales and service people, enjoyment of product and then the continuous improvement in each of the five areas listed above. Without those elements in the product or the service offering then the marketing department simply brings awareness of a low quality product or service. As for the sales side of things, the sales department can't work miracles by getting people to see past the flaws of the product .

As a side note, I firmly believe that word of mouth advertising (both in terms of friends and the impact of other's opinions on the internet) has much more impact then traditional advertising or 'Madmen', although I believe marketing serves a purpose of bringing awareness of something new, but even that has its challenges.
If you ask sales, they will surely say sales and if you ask marketing, they will surely say marketing. Sales and marketing absolutely go hand in hand. It's NOT an and/or situation. It must be AND. Each has a role in generating value and independently each is weaker. Anyone who actually thinks there is an answer to this question simply does not understand what either does.

Both are important... however it is the stage at which you/your organization is decides which one takes precedence.

Why Sleep well ...!

A month ago, many of us heard about the sad demise of Ranjan Das from Bandra, Mumbai. Ranjan, just 42 years of age, was the CEO of SAP-Indian Subcontinent, the youngest CEO of an MNC in India. He was very active in sports, was a fitness freak and a marathon runner. It was common to see him run on Bandra's Carter Road.Just after Diwali, on 21st Oct, he returned home from his gym after a workout, collapsed with a massive heart attack and died.

It was certainly a wake-up call for corporate India. However, it was even more disastrous for runners amongst us. Since Ranjan was an avid marathoner (in Feb 09, he ran Chennai Marathon at the same time some of us were running Pondicherry Marathon 180 km away), the question came as to why an exceptionally active, athletic person succumb to heart attack at 42 years of age.

Was it the stress?
While Ranjan had mentioned that he faced a lot of stress, that is a common element in most of our lives. We used to think that by being fit, one can conquer the bad effects of stress. So I doubted if the cause was stress.

The Real Reason
However, everyone missed out a small line in the reports that Ranjan used to make do with 4-5 hours of sleep. This is an earlier interview of Ranjan on NDTV in the program 'Boss' Day Out':

Here he himself admits that he would love to get more sleep (and that he was not proud of his ability to manage without sleep, contrary to what others extolled).

The Evidence

Short sleep duration (<5 or 5-6 hours) increased risk for high BP by 350% to 500% compared to those who slept longer than 6 hours per night. Paper published in 2009.As you know, high BP kills.

Young people (25-49 years of age) are twice as likely to get high BP if they sleep less. Paper published in 2006.

Individuals who slept less than 5 hours a night had a 3-fold increased risk of heart attacks. Paper published in 1999.

Complete and partial lack of sleep increased the blood concentrations of High sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hs-cRP),the strongest predictor of heart attacks. Even after getting adequate sleep later, the levels stayed high!!

Just one night of sleep loss increases very toxic substances in body such as Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Tumour Necrosis Factor-Alpha (TNF-alpha) and C-reactive protein (cRP). They increase risks of many medical conditions, including cancer, arthritis andheart disease. Paper published in 2004.

Sleeping for <=5 hours per night leads to 39% increase in heart disease. Sleeping for <=6 hours per night leads to 18% increase in heart disease. Paper published in 2006.

Ideal Sleep

For lack of space, I cannot explain here the ideal sleep architecture. But in brief, sleep is composed of two stages: REM (Rapid Eye Movement) and non-REM. The former helps in mental consolidation while the latter helps in physical repair and rebuilding. During the night, you alternate between REM and non-REM stages 4-5 times.

The earlier part of sleep is mostly non-REM. During that period,your pituitary gland releases growth hormones that repair your body. The latter part of sleep is more and more REM type. For you to be mentally alert during the day, the latter part of sleep is more important.

No wonder when you wake up with an alarm clock after 5-6 hours of sleep, you are mentally irritable throughout the day (lack of REM sleep). And if you have slept for less than 5 hours, your body is in a complete physical mess (lack of non-REM sleep), you are tired throughout the day, moving like a zombie and your immunity is way down (I’ve been there, done that all) Finally, as long-distance runners, you need an hour of extra sleep to repair the running related damage.

In conclusion: Barring stress control, Ranjan Das did everything right: eating proper food, exercising (marathoning!), maintaining proper weight. But he missed getting proper and adequate sleep, minimum 7 hours. In my opinion, that killed him.

If you are not getting enough sleep (7 hours), you are playing with fire, even if you have low stress.I was so spooked after seeing the scientific evidence last week that than, I ensure I do not even set the alarm clock under 7 hours. Now, that is a nice excuse to get some more sleep. ;o)

Unfortunately, Ranjan Das is not alone when it comes to missing sleep. Many of us are doing exactly the same, perhaps out of ignorance. Please forward this to as many of your colleagues as possible, especially those who might be short-changing their sleep. If we can save even one young life because of this, I would be the happiest person on earth.

It isn’t how many degrees you have. It’s what you can do. So that should have a big impact on you. What that says is, it doesn’t matter what you look like, what you talk like, where you went to school, where you came from, any of that stuff. What matters is what you’re capable of…!

With a little inspiration, that can have a profound effect , only to realize how much raw talent there is out there for us to exploit, leverage, take advantage of, and how much talent there is that people can give that organizations , they don’t harvest, they don’t get the best of, because of structure, because of strategy, because of rules.

There are three things that matter-

The first is competence — just being good at what you do, whatever it is, and focusing on the job you have, not on the job you think you want to have.

The second one is confidence. People want to know what you think. So you have to have enough desirable self-confidence to articulate a point of view.

The third thing is caring. Nothing today is about one individual. This is all about the team, and in the end, this is about giving a damn about your customers, your company, the people around you, and recognizing that the people around you are the ones who make you look good.

People who are analytical, and have common sense, good judgment and the ability to get along with other people, are the people in business.

We work so that we keep one foot in today and one foot in tomorrow, regardless of what’s going on. In an economy like this, everyone wants to look at their shoes. You can’t. We’ve got to be doing as many things about tomorrow as we are today. We operate with a philosophy that says, never be afraid to change, even when we’re at the top of our game.
In the middle of tough economic times for everybody, we have to built a human capital strategy for the future, Refresh our corporate-wide strategy, and move leadership people around into different positions and promoted some new people into leadership roles to infuse energy.
All of this is about energizing people, giving them broader scope and new experiences. This obviously helps build durability in terms of people being able to have multiple jobs, and it’s an important part of succession planning, getting the athletes the experience they need in different spaces.

So just when you think all the cylinders are clicking and everything’s right, that’s the time you have to change, because that’s the world we live in now. If you rest, it will cost you, because global competitiveness is here to stay, and it’s not about the traditional competitors anymore. It’s about new and emerging competitors that you’ve never heard of, and you just have to get your mind around the new normal, as they call it.

If you look at why people in general leave companies, they often leave because they get bored. And high-performance people are learners by nature. And as long as they’re learning, they’ll stay where they are. When they start to think about leaving, when they start to respond to a headhunter’s call, is when they haven’t been learning.

One of our other principles is that people who are successful are the ones who ask for help. It sounds simple, but to get an organization to believe that asking for help is a sign of strength, and not weakness, is a huge thing.

My first choice for MBA was one of the top schools from Canada but as i stand today.. i understand if i study in North America

I am going to spend nothing less than 60000$ for only fee's(TIER1 Schools or any good top school’s fee)

Scholarship is not guaranteed so chances are 1% out of 100 , As i compete with entire class and business school as a whole .so i am not thinking of scholarships.

MBA is 2 years in North America, so my living expense entirely i assume is going to be nothing less than 30000$ for two years.

Part time jobs, for a fact MBA is so intense , it will kill most of your time in assignments. So you will not be able to do work on part time job's every semester.

ROI (return of investment) ,I am spending nothing less than $100000. what will be ROI,you are the best person to judge your self..

Further "West is coming to East" hope you know east is Asia

On the slip side if I study in UK and not think like a true American Dreamer

No visa problem, I will get visa in max 10 working days, this is not case with North America or Rest of Europe, I am sure many will agree.

Fee's , UK and Europe as a whole has few good top schools, where total fee is nothing more than 15000 pounds

MBA is only for one year in UK/EUROPE .A Big plus for working executives.

Living expense would be max 800pounds for a month and one year MBA only. So expenses only for a year...

Hence when I consider total amount i have spend on my fee + living expense + travel + extra’s, I am spending nothing more than 25lakhs + no part time jobs. And when i compare same with North America i am spending nothing less than 50 lakhs, as dollar is 50 right now :)

Now UK and Europe , if you compare it will be the same I would choose UK from Europe because when i come back to India studied and worked in UK would sound better than rest of Europe.

Uk is English spoken country. So no language problem’s , if i compare to Spain or France etc etc.

UK gives me full time work permit after MBA , rest of Europe comes in EU(European union) if you want to work post your MBA, your employee has to prove that you can work better than someone from there country, makes it hard for work permit.

I thought of Australia too, with current scenario, I don’t need to say anything i guess....”)

A True Incident

An Indian man walks into a bank in New York City and asks for the loan officer.He tells the loan officer that he is going to India on business for two weeks and needs to borrow $5,000.

The bank officer tells him that the bank will need some form of security for the loan, so the Indian man hands over the keys and documents of new Ferrari parked on the street in front of the bank. He produces the title and everything checks out.The loan officer agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan.

The bank's president and its officers all enjoy a good laugh at the Indian for using a $250,000 Ferrari as collateral against a $5,000 loan. An employee of the bank then drives the Ferrari into the bank's underground garage and parks it there.

Two weeks later, the Indian returns, repays the $5,000 and the interest, which comes to $15.41. The loan officer says, "Sir, we are very happy to have had your business,and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a multi millionaire.What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow"$5,000"?

The Indian replies:

"Where else in New York City can I park my car for two weeks for only $15.41 and expect it to be there when I return"

With personal account deposit bank of $1500 billion (Rs. 64.5 lac Crores) in foreign reserve which have been misappropriated, an amount 13 times larger than the country's foreign debt, one needs to rethink if India is a poor country?

DISHONEST INDUSTRIALISTS, scandalous politicians and corrupt IAS, IRS, IPS officers have deposited in foreign banks in their illegal personal accounts a sum of about $ 1500 billion, which have been misappropriated by them. This amount is about 13 times larger than the country's foreign debt. With this amount 45 crore poor people can get Rs 1,00,000 each. This huge amount has been appropriated from the people of India by exploiting and betraying them.

Once this huge amount of black money and property comes back to India , the entire foreign debt can be repaid in 24 hours. After paying the entire foreign debt, we will have surplus amount, almost 12 times larger than the foreign debt. If this surplus amount is invested in earning interest, the amount of interest will be more than the annual budget of the Central government. So even if all the taxes are
abolished, then also the Central government will be able to maintain the country very comfortably.

Just read the following details and note how these dishonest industrialists, scandalous politicians, corrupt officers, cricketers, film actors, illegal sex trade and protected wildlife operators, to name just a few, sucked this country's wealth and prosperity. This may be the picture of deposits in Swiss banks only. What about other international banks?

Now do the math - India with $1456 billion or $1.4 trillion has more money in Swiss banks than rest of the world combined. Public loot since 1947: Can we bring back our money? It is one of the biggest loots witnessed by mankind -- the loot of the Aam Aadmi(common man) since 1947, by his brethren occupying public office. It has been orchestrated by politicians, bureaucrats and some businessmen. The list is almost all-encompassing. No wonder, everyone in India loots with impunity and without any fear.

What is even more depressing in that this ill-gotten wealth of ours has been stashed away abroad into secret bank accounts located in some of the world's best known tax havens. And to that extent the Indian economy has been stripped of its wealth. Ordinary Indians may not be exactly aware of how such secret accounts operate and what are the rules and regulations that go on to govern such tax havens. However, one may well be aware of 'Swiss bank accounts,' the shorthand for murky dealings, secrecy and of course pilferage from developing countries into rich developed ones.

In March 2005, the Tax Justice Network (TJN) published a research finding demonstrating that $11.5 trillion of personal wealth was held offshore by rich individuals across the globe. The findings estimated that a large proportion of this wealth was managed from some 70 tax havens.

Further, augmenting these studies of TJN, Raymond Baker -- in his widely celebrated book titled 'Capitalism' s Achilles Heel: Dirty Money and How to Renew the Free Market System' -- estimates that at least $5 trillion have been shifted out of poorer countries to the West since the mid-1970.

It is further estimated by experts that one per cent of the world's
population holds more than 57 per cent of total global wealth, routing
it invariably through these tax havens. How much of this is from India
is anybody's guess.

The Germans offered the names to any country that asked for it. Curiously, India, with a history of black money stashed abroad, has shown no interest in the list; it still has not made a request for details. On February 14, Deutsche Post CEO Klaus Zumwinkel was arrested in Berlin for Tax Evasion. His name was on a DVD that BND, Germany's intelligence agency, bought from a former bank employee of the LTG Group, run by Liechtenstein' s ruling dynasty. The disc had the names of 1,400 account holders of the LTG Group's Treuhand subsidiary. BND bought the list, dating from 2002, for Euros 4.2 million. Six hundred of the names lived in Germany, with a possible tax evasion of around Euros 5 billion; Berlin launched 125 tax investigations. On February 25, German finance ministry spokesman Thorsten Albig announced that the names and details of the other 800 account holders would be given to their respective countries, at no extra cost. All the countries had to do was ask for them. Finland, Norway and Sweden promptly asked. The USA, Australia, France, UK, Ireland, Italy, Canada, New Zealand and Spain subsequently put in requests. The Americans are now investigating 100 potential tax evaders on that list. Independently, the British stumbled onto information on 400 Italians with accounts at a Liechtenstein bank, and leaked it to the media.

India, however, which has long tried to uncover details of bank accounts in Switzerland and St Kitts, has not made a request. It should be made by the finance ministry through the ministry of external affairs, for it is something that concerns the Central Board of Direct Taxes, the Directorate of Enforcement and the Central Bureau of Investigation. Though the government is aware of the developments in Germany, till date, no request has gone, informed sources told this website's newspaper. Incidentally, Liechtenstein' s Prince Hans-Adams II, the owner of the LTG group, has visited India, to a warm welcome by our political class.

Why Obama Can’t Sell IT

This is NOT a pro or against President Obama article but an analysis from a sales perspective that might offer some insight into much of the consternation surrounding the healthcare debate occurring today

Obama rushed into office ready to shake Washington up but in so doing made a few miscalculations:

• He began by signing policies and reversing previous administration policies without taking the time to understand their long term ramifications.

• He hired people in his cabinet who were later found out to have not paid their fair share of taxes.

• Then he rushed through a stimulus package with the intent of creating ‘shovel ready projects’ to keep unemployment below 8% (now headed for 10%).

• He promised to post legislation on his website for the public to review before voting on it, yet, many in Congress never read the stimulus legislation let alone the American public.

• He hasn’t directly addressed the problems with existing government run programs like: Medicare, Social Security, Education System, the Post Office and FannieMay/Freddie Mac are in dire financial straits.

• He wants to spend even as his own Congressional Budget Office estimates his bailouts and other programs will ‘quadruple’ the deficit of the previous administration.

We’re all sympathetic to the fact that Obama inherited a financial mess from the previous administration and the American people (yes, we were complicit in creating that mess). Nonetheless, Obama has to demonstrate that he ‘can’ fix things that are currently broken (e.g., Deficit spending, Medicare, Social Security,…) before the American public will ‘buy’ that he can fix the healthcare system or any other program. He can’t ‘smooth talk’ his way out of this mess because Americans are smart and the Internet makes them smarter!

What Obama needs now are ‘small successes’ to help him build some sales momentum which in turn will help him cross the Credible Solution Gap in order to implement much larger changes in the future. Today he lacks the necessary credibility to get his market (i.e., the American people) to buy what he’s selling. Until he can demonstrate that he can get the simpler things done, the market will not entrust him with the healthcare behemoth. Until that happens, Obama won’t be able to sell it!

Swiss cities pay the best...Mumbai pays peanuts

It pays to work in Switzerland: employees in Zurich and Geneva have the highest net wages in the world, a study by banking group UBS shows, while those in Mumbai take home the lowest.

The Swiss cities were also ranked among the top five most expensive in the world in the bank's 2009 Price and Earnings international study.

"With its extremely high gross wages and comparatively low tax rates, Switzerland is a very employee-friendly country," the Swiss bank said in a statement.

"No other city allows workers to take home more income at the end of the month than Zurich and Geneva."

The study, published every three years, compares the income and purchasing power of employees in 73 cities across the globe, highlighting wide discrepancies in wages between different regions, and even within the same country.

The biggest gaps were found in Asia, the study said, with Tokyo ranking as one of the world's five costliest cities while the capitals of developing countries such as Malaysia, the Philippines and India were all at the bottom of the price range.

Oslo was this year's most expensive city, based on a standardised basket of 122 goods and services, followed by Zurich, Copenhagen, Geneva, Tokyo and New York.

When rents are factored in, however, New York rises to the top spot, the study said.

This year, the bank said currency fluctuations caused by the global economic crisis affected the rankings of several cities, most notably London, which was the second most expensive city in 2006, but which fell nearly 20 places following the pound's drop earlier this year.

The analysis involved more than 30,000 data points, collected by several independent observers in each city, in March and April, the bank said. All amounts were converted into a single currency before being compared.

The world's cheapest places to live were Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur, Manila in the Philippines, and Delhi and Mumbai.

But the average employee in many of these cities, as well as Jakarta and Nairobi, gets paid some of the world's lowest salaries which have between 11 percent and 15 percent of the purchasing power of a salary in Zurich.

"An average wage-earner in Zurich and New York can buy an iPod nano from an Apple store after nine hours of work. At the other end of the spectrum, workers in Mumbai need to work 20 nine-hour days, roughly the equivalent of one month's salary," the study said.

Working hours also varied in the cities surveyed, with the study finding that on average, people in Asian and Middle Eastern cities work much more than the global average of 1,902 hours per year. Overall, the most hours are worked in Cairo, followed by Seoul, while the least hours worked were in Lyon and Paris.

Fatimah bore the bomb of her cry. The death angel came toward him, But Rasulullah (S.A.A.W) asked why Jibril did not come along with him.

Then, Jibril was called. Jibril was ready in the sky to
welcome the soul of Habibullah and the leader of the earth.

'O Jibril, explain me about my rights in front of ALLAH?' Rasulullah (S.A.A.W) asked with a weakest voice.

'The doors of sky have opened, the angels are waiting for your soul..'

'All jannats open widely waiting for you,' Jibril said.

But, in fact, all this did not make Rasulullah (S.A.A.W) relieved,his eyes were still full of worry..

It became closer and closer, the time for Malaekat Izrail to do his work.

Slowly, Rasulullah's (S.A.A.W) soul was pulled. It was seemed that the body of Rasulullah was full of sweat; the nerves of his neck became tight.

'Jibril, how painful this sakaratul maut is!'

Rasulullah (S.A.A..W) uttered a groan slowly. Fatimah closed her eyes, Ali sat beside her bowed deeply and Jibril turned his face back.

'Am I repugnant to you that you turn your face back o Jibril?'
Rasulullah (S.A.A..W) asked the Deliverer of Wahy.

'Who is the one who could see the Habibullah in his condition of sakaratul maut,' Jibril said.

Not for a while, Rasulullah (S.A.A.W) uttered a groan because of unbearable pain.

'O ALLAH, how great is this sakaratul maut. Give me all these pains, don't give it to my people.'

The body of Rasulullah (S.A.A.W) became cold, his feet and chest did not move anymore....

His lips vibrated as if he wanted to say something, Ali took his ear close to Rasulullah (S.A.A.W) .

'Uushiikum bis shalati, wa maa malakat aimanuku - take care of the saalat and take care the weak people among you.'

Outside the room, there were cries shouted each other, sahabah held each other. Fatimah closed her face with her hands and, again, Ali took his ear close to Rasulullah's (S.A.A.W) mouth which became bluish.

'Ummatii, ummatii, ummatii?' - 'My people, my People, my people.'

Could we love each other like him? Allahumma salle 'ala Muhammad wa baarik wa salim 'alaihi. How deep is Rasulullah's love to us.

Don't worry if people hate you because there are many others who love and care you in the earth. But be worried if ALLAH hates you because there is no other who loves and cares you in akhirat.

May Almighty Allah guide all of us to the Right Path and give all of us the courage to accept the Truth in the light of Qur'an and Sunnah and to reject all things which are in contradiction to the Holy Qur'an and Sunnah.

E=mc^2 is not from Einstein

Do you know why Einstein newer received the Nobel Prize for "his" work on special relativity?

E=mc^2 formula was obtained by Poincare and Lorentz.This is the reason that modern historians provide no credibility to physicists' claim that was Einstein's.

Precisely, it was Lorentz who objected the Nobel Prize was awarded to Einstein for SR(special relativity).

Poincare published the theory of relativity before Einstein did in 1904 . Poincare did eventually do the math of deriving Lorentz's transformations from relativistic postulates but that paper came out AFTER Einstein's. Moreover, Einstein said newer read to Poincare but at least two colleagues said the contrary

Einstein cited Lorentz as the father of Lorentz transformations but does not cited to Poincare and did not cite that mass formula was also from Lorentz. Lorentz had his transformations in the 1890's. Lorentz (physicist) was working in the solving of a physical problem not in pure mathematical machinery. After, Lorentz worked in his incorrect molecular force hypothesis. Lorentz said “Einstein simply postulates what we have deduced... from the equations of the electromagnetic field”.

The theory of relativity was completely done by Poincare. Einstein simply copied. In fact the two postulates of Einstein (1905) are exactly the two postulates of Poincare (1904), exactly the same!

Einstein's paper on the subject, contain an incorrect derivation of E=mc^2 as noted by Ives, Planck, Stark, and others, which imply that copied the formula.

There is also historical evidence that Einstein copied to Hilbert the equations of GR(General Relativity)

Although Einstein got the Nobel Prize in 1921 for his work on the photo electric effect in a paper also published in his golden year, 1905. You could also ask the question, why didn't Einstein get the Nobel Prize for his work on Brownian motion which basically finally proved the existence of molecules (and thus atoms) by making testable predictions which were shown to be accurate by Jean Baptiste Perrin - who won the Nobel Prize in 1926.

One has to conclude that Einstein was the most brilliant copy cat in the history of physics. I don't attack everybody, but I attack people who make phony claims.

What is the ruling on Celebrating the night of the Isra’ and Mi’raaj, which is the twenty-seventh night of Rajab?

Praise be to Allaah.
There is no doubt that the Isra’ and Mi’raaj (the Prophet’s Night Journey and Ascent into heaven) are two great signs of Allaah which point to the truthfulness of the His Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and the greatness of his status before Allaah. They are also signs of the great power of Allaah, and of His exalted position above His creation. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Glorified (and Exalted) be He (Allaah) [above all that (evil) they associate with Him]

Who took His slave (Muhammad) for a journey by night from Al‑Masjid Al‑Haraam (at Makkah) to Al‑Masjid Al‑Aqsa (in Jerusalem), the neighbourhood whereof We have blessed, in order that We might show him (Muhammad) of Our Ayaat (proofs, evidences, lessons, signs, etc.). Verily, He is the All‑Hearer, the All‑Seer”

There are mutawaatir reports from the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) that he was taken up into the heavens, and their gates were opened for him, until he passed beyond the seventh heaven, where his Lord spoke to him as He willed, and enjoined the five daily prayers upon him. At first Allaah, may He be exalted, enjoined fifty prayers, but our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) kept going back and asking Him to reduce it, until He made them five, so they are five obligatory prayers but fifty in reward, because each good deed is rewarded tenfold. To Allaah be praise and thanks for all His blessings.

With regard to this night on which the Isra’ and Mi’raaj took place, there is nothing in the saheeh ahaadeeth to indicate that it is in Rajab or in any other month. Everything that has been narrated concerning a specific date for these events cannot be proven to have come from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) according to the scholars of hadeeth. Allaah has wise reasons for causing the people to forget it. Even if the date were proven, it would not be permissible for the Muslims to single it out for particular acts of worship, and it is not permissible for them to celebrate it, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and his companions (may Allaah be pleased with them) did not celebrate it and they did not single it out in any way. If celebrating it was something that is prescribed in Islam, the Messenger would have told his ummah about that, either in word or in deed. If any such thing had happened, it would have been well known, and his companions would have transmitted the information to us. They narrated from their Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) everything that his ummah needs to know, and they did not neglect any aspect of the religion, rather they were the first ones to do anything good. If celebrating this night had been prescribed in Islam, they would have been the first people to do so. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was the most sincere of people, and he conveyed the message to the people in full, and he fulfilled the trust. If venerating and celebrating this night were part of the religion of Allaah, then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) would have done that and would not have concealed it. Since no such thing happened, it is known that celebrating it and venerating it is not part of Islam at all. Allaah has perfected this ummah’s religion for it and has completed His favour upon them, and He condemns those who introduce things into the religion which Allaah has not ordained. Allaah says in His holy Book, in Soorat al-Maa’idah (interpretation of the meaning):

“This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion”

[al-Maa’idah 5:3]

And Allaah says in Soorat al-Shoora (interpretation of the meaning):
“Or have they partners with Allaah (false gods) who have instituted for them a religion which Allaah has not ordained?”

Why not IIPM

The Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM) boasts being India’s best business school and has been saying it cooperates with several renowned schools in Europe and the US for years – which is often false information. But although its unserious business practices are known, some renowned business schools nonetheless cooperate with the controversial Indian school.

In contrast, the largest Indian newspapers have been holding back on critiquing the business school for years. With its entire-page ads, the IIPM is ultimately one of their largest advertising customers. Some renowned publications even get carried away with puff pieces sometimes, which the IIPM proudly displays on its website. It isn’t always recognizable whether the presented articles aren’t really just editorially-constructed advertisement texts.

The IIPM has also been praised by Della Bradshaw, editor for MBA topics and the MBA ranking at the Financial Times (FT). In her "The Maverick Management Guru" article (published in 2006), Bradshaw notably wrote uncritically about the founder “Honorary Dean” Arindam Chaudhuri and his, according to him, largest business school in the world.

It would’ve already been logical to scrutinize the supposed success story. Indian IIPM grads receive their MBA degree, for example, from the International Management Institute (IMI) in Brussels, which is unknown and not accredited in Belgium. (Source: www.timi.edu)

The trick with the partner schools is also old. The Stanford Graduate School of Business significantly distanced itself back in 2007 from the IIPM’s statements that Stanford would offer a certified executive education program with the IIPM. “This claim is false,” wrote Gale Bitter, Associate Dean and Director. “Neither the Stanford Graduate School of Business nor the office of Stanford Executive Education has ties of any kind with the IIPM.” Read statement

Before, in december 2006 the Deputy Director at the Stanford Center for Professional Development, Paul Marca, had already written a letter to the Director of Global Strategy at IIPM, Siddharth Nambiar, in which he has complaint about the misleading advertising und has asked him immediately to cease "any and all uses of Stanford`s name and logo". After Gale Bitter`s statement Siddharth Nambiar complaint to her about the defamation of the good name of the IIPM and referred to some Stanford professors who had taught at IIPM.

And Stanford is hardly an isolated case. The Chicago Booth School of Business recently emerged as a partner as IIPM students were to take part in the Advanced Global Management Program in Chicago. So IIPM announced: "The World´s No.1 Ranked B-School. What makes the program perhaps most unique and distinct from any other similar program in India is the compulsory International Residency Program on Advanced Global Management that the students will undergo at the Graduate School of Business, University Chicago."

Following demand, Chicago reacted immediately and wrote the IIPM on June 23rd: "We kindly ask that all mention of Chicago GSB being a part of this Advanced Global Management program be immediately removed from all pages of IIPM’s sites." "We are really sorry for this," answered Chanda Mehra, Senior Manager of the Global Outreach Program at the IIPM.

The document was changed and now "The World´s No.1 Ranked B-School" practically hangs in an empty space. The following sentence is all that remains: "What makes the program perhaps most unique and distinct from any other similar program in India is the compulsory International Residency Program on Advanced Global Management that the students will undergo." Where the participants will take the program however remains a mystery.

But not every business school is anxious about its reputation. The behavior of the Haas School of Business at the University of California Berkeley is noteworthy. In February the Californian school told the Indian magazine Careers360 that Berkeley doesn’t have anything to do with the IIPM and has already heard that the school is known for announcing false connections with top schools.

But then the press department corrected the answer and explained that there is a new customer relationship between the IIPM and the Center for Executive Education. The first program took place in June. And in May Berkeley answered that the IIPM, as a customer, could call itself a "business school ‘participating’ with the Haas School of Business."

Clearly business schools are looking for cooperation with Indian schools so frantically that they yield their good name, Careers360 commented on the behavior. They put aside their ethical principles and forfeit their professionalism in order to earn a few more dollars.

The document even creates the impression that Berkeley gives credits for the program. Responding to a query by MBA Channel, Berkeley explained on July 2nd: "The Haas School has asked IIPM to take the Haas/UC Berkeley logo off its web site and marketing materials and to correct its language regarding the certificate of completion and the credits. The Center for Executive Education does not offer credits, only a certificate of completion with respect to the segment of the program that it has taught."

The Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge is also mentioned as a “partner B-School.” Clearly it has no qualms about having its logo next to the questionable school. The school offers IIPM participants a five-day executive education program in Cambridge, writes the press office. "IIPM have engaged us to deliver and the first group will commence in July 2009. There are no university qualifications awarded from Cambridge University or Judge Business School. The only certificate is a certificate of attendance which is what we provide to participants on all our programmes."

IIPM will be deleted from fake varsity list, UGC tells HC

New Delhi, June 27 The University Grants Commission (UGC) today assured the Delhi High Court to remove the name of Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM) from the list of fake universities on its website.

In turn, the IIPM agreed to make it clear in its advertisements that it offers only certificate courses. The institute would also clarify that its courses were aimed at making the students eligible for degree courses like — MBA and BBA — provided under International Management Institute (IMI), Belgium.

The interim order passed by Justice Rajiv Shakdher will be in place till final disposal of the writ petition and posted the matter for August 28.

The court was hearing a petition filed by IIPM seeking direction to UGC to withdraw its declaration that the institute was a “fake university” from its website.
